The World of The Witcher: Gwent

The Witcher 3 is set in a dark and realistic fantasy world, inspired by medieval Slavic and European folklore. With a gritty atmosphere, full of war, superstition, and supernatural creatures, we will travel through kingdoms like Temeria, Redania, and Skellige, ravaged by political conflicts and the Nilfgaardian invasion. Magic exists, but it is dangerous; witchers are outcasts, and monsters are often metaphors for social problems.

In this world, villagers suffer under poverty and fear of beasts like werewolves and vampires, and unlike other fantasy worlds, there are no idealized heroes: Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher, navigates between brutality and compassion in a universe where decisions rarely have an absolute "good." The lesser evil is often the best option.

The Story of Gwent: The Game Within a Game

In The Witcher universe, it's a favorite pastime of merchants, nobles, and soldiers. It became so popular that CD Projekt Red released it as a standalone title.

It's played over three rounds with a deck of cards (factions like Nilfgaard or Skellige), using units (infantry, ranged, siege) and special abilities. The goal is to overcome the opponent's total power in two out of three rounds, while managing limited resources.

The battlefield features several rows where players deploy their units and special ability cards to fight. Players must skillfully bluff, manage their resources, and read their opponent's moves to choose wisely when to aggressively press for a round and when to hold back and play it safe.

Iconic cards: Some represent key characters (like Geralt, Ciri, or Yennefer) or creatures (Bruxa, Dragon).

Collecting: Geralt can acquire cards by defeating NPCs in matches or by purchasing them, encouraging exploration.

Gwent adds depth to the role-playing, reflecting the world's culture: from humble taverns to the court of Toussaint, where nobles gamble fortunes. It's a prime example of how The Witcher 3 transforms even minigames into memorable experiences.
